What is goop?  Is it a liquid or a solid?  That is the standing question, and the answer is that it is actually both!  Goop is commonly referred to as oobleck and acts as both a liquid and a solid at the same time.  How is this possible?  Read on and be amazed by science!

Method
  • Begin by mixing roughly two parts corn starch with one part tonic water in a large bowl or play container.

  • For point of reference we used four cups of corn starch and two cups of water.  I recommend adding the water slowly and mixing, slowly adding more tonic water and mixing until the desired consistency is reached.  You want the oobleck to be slime-like but mold-able.
  • Add eyeballs, bugs, ghosts, wrapped candy and whatever else you might have on hand to make a good goblin GOO.

If you do not have a black light on hand you can still enjoy the fun of goblin goo!  Simply use water in place of tonic in the recipe.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE FUN

  • Why does the goop glow?
Tonic water is the "secret ingredient" that gives this recipe it's glow!  Read more on why tonic water glows.
  • How is the goop/oobleck able to change from a liquid to a solid?
Goop is a non-Newtonian fluid. This means that it changes consistencies under different stressors. Read more on non-Newtonian fluids.

Tips:
Troubleshooting:
  • Is your oobleck too runny?  That means you added too much water, but that is ok!  Simply add a bit more corn starch and mix until the desired consistency is reached.
  • Is your goop not fluid?  That means you need a bit more water.  Just keep mixing!  You will know when you have it right.
